About

Having learned my trade at an Indiana awards company in the early 80’s, I went into business for myself in 1987. I’ve spent 20 years as a commercial engraver; making engraved brass nameplates for furniture and cabinet companies & craftsmen. My work labels paintings in 2 state capitals, museums, and is in the homes of 10’s of thousands of Americas in every state as well as celebrities, politicians and sports figures. I’m proud of that. To me, engraving has always been more than just a way to make a living. I’ve worked 34 years at my craft. 32 of those I worked for myself. I’ve spent those years doing what I like to do. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I enjoy creating things that are special. And every plate I engrave IS special to the person I’m doing it for. To do that well requires communication. I do a lot of that. Customer service isn’t a dept I have, it’s a thing that I do. I’m in the business of preserving memories; not just scratching letters into metal. My goal isn’t to be the fastest, or least expensive; my goal is to be the best.

Errors

I make them, my customers make them – we all do; there’s no getting away from it. But what I can do is cut them down; and my screen shots do that. You’ll receive a screen shot of your layout for approval or correction after you place your order. You’ll be able to see exactly what your plate will look like. For spotting errors, two pairs of eyes are better than one. In spite of that, sometimes things happen anyway. If that occurs my policy is simple; I pay for my errors and you pay for yours. Strikes me as fair.

Our Products

The M.L. Brown company is a custom engraving business. This covers a lot of territory, but we’re focusing now on engraving to be used outdoors. We use UltraBlack (a 10+ year exterior alum) and anodized aluminum, which will hold up to the weather better than everything else save stainless steel. This material is used both for our plaque inserts and outdoor plates. Nothing lasts forever however, and our products are no exception. The most vulnerable aspect of anodized aluminum is the dye used to produce the colors. In direct sunlight this will fade over the years. In appearance, it’s more like a stain than a paint. The shade of color you see depends on how the light hits it. We shear our own plates from sheet stock and can accommodate your size requirements.
