Mounting Tips

There’s no substitute for holding your plate against the mount to check the fit before install.  If you need to flatten the plate so it lays right, Don’t hold it in your hands  – you don’t have much control that way.  Instead lay it on a flat surface like a desk or table.  Lift up one end, fingers on top – thumbs on bottom, and use a rolling motion with minimum pressure.  Many small bends is better than one big one.  Aluminum is a metal that doesn’t spring back to shape very much, so just go easy.

Adhesive:  If your plate or sign has an adhesive backing, then the main consideration is getting it on straight the 1st time.  Re-positioning is normally not possible without damage to the plate.  So you need to mark where the plate goes on your mount – in a way you can take your mark back off again.  Masking tape works just fine for this.  Use the tape to mark where the top edge goes and put only the top edge on your mark first.  If only the edge is in contact you can pick it back up and try again.  Once it’s right, gently lower the plate before you press it on. 

Screw Mount:  Trying to muscle in a screw is risky business.  One small slip could deliver a damaged plate, mount, finger or combination.  If there’s no choice, then taping a piece of cardboard over your plate during the install will provide at least a little protection.  A better idea is to do what the cabinet company’s do; pre-drill your holes.  Hold your plate against your mount & mark where the holes need to be.  Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the shaft of your screw.  Drilling too deep or not perfect is still okay.  The screw will follow your hole & mount flat on the plate as it should.  A small piece of masking tape, stuck on your drill bit, can show you how deep to drill.

Another good idea is to use silicone adhesive with screw mount too, especially with bench plates, as a precaution against your plate & it’s mount parting company down the road.  There are a number of good reasons this could happen. An ounce of prevention…
